If you feel you've received it in error, reliable removal instructions are at the bottom. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In this issue: 1. Virus set to detonate today, March 6. 2. SurfSafely.net Dial-up service almost ready. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Don't forget, archived copies of all past news letters can always be found at http://surfsafely.com/surfsafety/frameset_news.html and are fully searchable. (It works now. Honest it does.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. Virus set to detonate today, March 6. ======================================== Short and sweet, we have a new virus spreading that targets Outlook Express 5.01 & 5.5 users who have not installed the Service Pack 2 patch. If you are using an unpatched version of OE for email, please download the SP2 patch from Microsoft. If you're not sure what version you have, open Internet Explorer and click "Help | About Internet Explorer." If your version is 5.01 or 5.50 and the "Update Version" is not SP2, don't waste another minute. Get your patch here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-027.asp This patch was originally released May 24, 2001. I confess. Even I was surprised to learn that my Update Version was still SP1. I am downloading my patch as I write this! Even though I refuse to use Outlook for my email (Is it any wonder why?), I breathe easier knowing my antivirus software is up to date. Quoted from the Computer Weekly article: "The worm is automatically executed when an infected message is opened, according to F-Secure, and infected messages are then sent using an SMTP engine built into Klez.e. Infected messages do not necessarily have an attachment to open - spreading the worm can occur simply by opening an infected e-mail." This virus carries a destructive payload and is not to be taken lightly. Make sure your antivirus definition files are up to date. By now, you ARE using antivirus software, RIGHT??? For more information see these articles from ZDNet, CW360 and McAfee. http://news.zdnet.co.uk/story/0,,t269-s2106027,00.html http://www.cw360.com/article&rd=&i=&ard=110462&fv=1 http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99367& ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2. SurfSafely.net Dial-up ========================= We are just DAYS away from our official launch of SurfSafely.net Dial-Up Internet service! If you're fed up with the "premium" ISP's and looking for an alternative, your prayers have been answered. Compared to AOL, MSN and Earthlink's $21.95/month service fee, SurfSafely.net will be only $19.95/month for unlimited access, offer 10 email accounts, 10MB personal home page web space, live 24/7 tech support. Unlike the former, you can elect to have your service unfiltered or prefiltered, custom tailored by 38 different categories. One correction from our last newsletter - there are approximately 1400 dial-up access numbers in the U.S. only, not 4000 in U.S. and Canada as previously stated. But, Canada and other International dial-up access IS in the works. You will be among the first to know when that part of our service goes live. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ That's news for now. Be informed, Be involved, Be well. Sincerely, Mark Brasche Founder and CEO, SurfSafely.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
